Ukraine needs more specialists and hospital equipment

Ukraine is experiencing an extraordinary need for rehabilitation due to the war. Currently, more than 200,000 people are awaiting professional treatment and prosthetics after injuries to limbs and body. The majority are soldiers, but many civilians, including children, have also been wounded due to Russian attacks. The biggest challenges at present are too few specialists and a severe lack of rehabilitation equipment.

This situation demands special efforts and new competencies, which Ukraine is working to develop through new rehabilitation centers and the training of professional personnel such as doctors, neurologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and more. Ukraine is asking for help with this development and education, which will also help meet a critical need after the war. They are dealing with injuries of a scale and severity they have no previous experience with. In Denmark, we possess substantial expertise and experience that can benefit Ukrainian professionals.

Rotary is supporting Ukraine in building professional capacity and developing their healthcare system. We do this in collaboration with the strongest professional partners we could wish for: Specialhospitalet, Rigshospitalet, and Prosthetist Jan Nielsen. In addition to developing professional skills, we aim to assist with equipment for the new rehabilitation centers, so that the medical teams we invite to Denmark can fully benefit from their new knowledge and skills after completing the training.

Together with Specialhospitalet, our goal is to establish a long-term collaboration with Ukraine focused on expanding and strengthening their national rehabilitation efforts both now and after the war.

The project is also strongly rooted in Rotary in Ukraine, and the project leader from Aarhus Impact RK has personally been to Ukraine, spoken with several of our partners, and visited two rehabilitation centers.

How we train Ukrainian doctors in Denmark

This autumn, we are inviting four teams from new rehabilitation centers in Lviv, Cherkasy, Ternopil, and Odessa.

Each center sends a multidisciplinary team, which may include rehabilitation physicians, neurologists, psychologists, occupational therapists, or physiotherapists.

We collaborate with Specialhospitalet, which provides expertise, staff, and facilities for the training stays. Rigshospitalet and Prosthetist Jan Nielsen also support the project and will participate in the training.

The training lasts five days, with a couple of additional days for arrival and departure. A tour of Copenhagen and a farewell dinner for our guests are also planned. Training takes place in Rødovre at the Specialized Hospital and one day at Rigshospitalet.

We handle transportation to and from Ukraine, as well as local transportation within the Greater Copenhagen Area, permits, and exit documents from Ukraine, in close collaboration with our Rotary colleagues in Ukraine.

We place great emphasis on the human connection and therefore offer private accommodation with Rotary members and other families in the Greater Copenhagen Area. As a host, you open your home to one or more participants for eight days and provide dinner and hospitality – a small effort with a big impact!

Fase 2: Hospital equipment for the 4 rehabilitation centers

After the training visits, we will assist in acquiring equipment for the Ukrainian rehabilitation centers.
The budget for this phase is estimated at DKK 1.5–2 million, and we are seeking partnerships and donations to support this effort.
